Ah Civ games. I remember when I would chomp at the bit to play just “one more turn” in the older civilisation games; staying up late, avoiding responsibilities just to see if I could finally get Genghis Kahn to bow to my will. Yet the release of Civilization: Beyond Earth left a sour taste in my mouth; it wasn’t as fun, wasn’t as interesting and like a lazy game from a company so often heralded for its work.

I was hoping, then, that the expansion (Rising Tide) would go some way to fixing the Civ shaped hole in my heart. It’s with no small amount of regret, then, that I tell you that it hasn’t. There’s a few changes here or there that improve the overall experience, but it is yet to go far enough to convince me that this is a worthwhile entry in the series. Maybe in a few more patches and expansions it might be, but right now? I don’t think so.
